So easy, even your 3 year old can do it.

And they could probably do it better too.

I am talking about a fast cheap splatter paint lampshade update Jackson Pollock style.

I know I have been MIA in the DIY department all summer, so I am starting off gently.

First you will need this:
old shade, a little RIT dye any color, old toothbrush or stiff brush and gloves
(last one is very important, messy!)

Find a spot outside you can get dye on and not get yourself into trouble:

Dip your brush into the dye:

And splash, flick and swing- just get angry at that shade!
You can drink whiskey too if you want to channel your inner Pollock,
but it is only 8 am here so I will stick to my coffee.

I also used my finger and flicked it through the toothbrush to get a finer spatter look.

I wound up using both techniques to get this:

If you want it super fancy, line the inside of the shade with gold foil paper afterwards.

All lit up:

And unlit:

Easy. Total cost $4.99 for the bottle of dye.

Wait til you see tomorrow's DIY.
( I had a lot of dye left over.)

You know I just saw the Hinson spatter wallpaper on Pinterest somewhere and thought to myself, "I could do that." Must be on the same wavelength. The difference, of course, is that I'm still sitting here drinking my coffee thinking about it, and you already did it! Love it!

I LOVE this!! I have to say, it's not very often you find something new in blogland but this is new. Awesome job.

A lampshade a la Hinson--I love it. Sometimes it's the little details that make all the difference, like this.

I like the lampshade. I have a project planned to paint a shade this weekend. We'll see how it turns out.

I love the pillows in the last picture. What fabric pattern is it/where did you get them? They'd be perfect in my living room!

Don't tell me you painted the dog, too.

Thanks Kathleen!
I actually designed that fabric in Spoonflower. It was my first attempt and I made it because I couldn't find that colorway anywhere (reasonably priced). You can buy it from Spoonflower here:

I ordered a yard of it in the Linen Cotton Canvas for $27/yd. I can email more pictures of it if you want closeups. It has an 18"repeat.
