Our Secret Project Revealed

Update: WE HAVE LAUNCHED!!!
Please click here to purchase our fretwork overlays.
Thanks for your patience.

THANK YOU for your patience! We are almost there.

OK everyone! After talking about this for like ever, I am finally going to let you guys in on our big secret.  Our? Well I have a partner in crime on this endeavour, you have met her before on the blog... my good friend Cheryle Rhuda- creative genius seamstress.

We actually decided to go into business over a year ago after a challenging day. Problem was we're both overly ADD and had way too many ideas to narrow down, so we took a little thinking break. Well that didn't last long. Enter a client's project. Remember this hack... Pax Wardrobes that I covered with mirror and some vintage overlays and trim?

Here was the cabinets before... bleh.

Well, after searching for more overlays I found they were either a) really hard to find b) really expensive  or c) really boring patterns- think radiator covers or garden trellis. Also the originals were made from balsa wood and they had rough edges and sanding was a pain!

So after many months of researching and designing Cheryle and I found a way to make our own overlays.  We had so many ideas of places and things to attach them to. But we needed to focus. We started on drawer fronts and went from there. For example, here is a MALM I had. I was tired of the dark wood, so I painted it. I then attached  the overlays and voila!

Before...

After...

Now it looks like a custom fretwork paneled dresser for a small fraction of what one would cost.
We also designed a size compatible for a RAST dresser...

(I had child labor in its assembly)

AFTER...

Currently we have 4 patterns, and 3 sizes.
We have 2 more patterns and a few more sizes in the works.
They are lightweight and are also paintable.

The applications for these are endless. We played around with them...

We have put them over mirrors, incorporated them with crown moldings, around doorways and on glass paneled doors/ windows, along table aprons, on headboards, on cabinet door fronts and as artwork. The list goes on and on.

SO.....

We are planning on launching the website next week, but we really need your help.  We are stuck on a name for this product and we need your opinions. We are letting you guys decide our name.

We are kicking around:
 Flair
 O'verlay or Overlaid
(sorry my mind is in the gutter and its real happy there)
 Garnish

Do you like any or none? Do you have a better suggestion?

We also would love to know what size you'd want to see us make.

Please comment and give us your 2 cents,  we need it more than ever.

We are offering an incentive for your advise....$50 gift card towards the product.
We will randonmly choose a winner and announce the day of the launch.

Let us know your suggestions, we are all ears!

Love,
 Danika & Cheryle

  1. These are GREAT! I am already trying to think of things to use these on. I like Overlaid.

  2. Oh I love these! I really don't care for the name "Flair" it reminds me Office Space (I hope you get that reference). It seems like more of an embellishment to me...

  3. I like Overlaid. Kind of cheeky. These are awesome and I would love them for our rast dressers.

  4. What a great idea ! These look amazing. I really love how it looks on the Malm. And I think Overlaid is cute !!

  5. I'm all for gutter-talk. Overlaid will be easy for me to remember!

And I FREAKING love these! Have been trying to saw some similar things freehand and have had a lot of trouble so this is awesome!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I like the name Overlaid. I would love to order these. I can't wait til they are available!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Definitely not 'Garnish', I already associate that name with the packaging products company. I like 'Overlaid'.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Overlaid is goooood. I like what you did with the one on the window it's f*cking awesome!!! I hope you sell out when you launch these b*tches and make lots of dough!

    The window is cool!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. that is awesome!!! and i love the idea of a single name , but flair also makes me think of office space and garnish makes me think of food... here is my suggestion...

    fret

    [fret] Show IPA
    noun, verb, fret·ted, fret·ting.
    –noun
    1.
    an interlaced, angular design; fretwork.
    2.
an angular design of bands within a border.
    3.
Heraldry . a charge composed of two diagonal strips interlacing with and crossing at the center of a mascle.

  10. OMG - I love them!!!! I am trying to figure out where I could use these!! I liked Flair - but I also like in the post when you called it Fretwork... so maybe playing with those two... mayve 'Fretwork and Flourish'
Also - you should have pricing for custom size and patterns - so people can order what they want (obvs would be more expensive, but people would pay for it)!!

  11. Simply brilliant! You all are going to make a killing in the diy world...I've been looking forever for something similar to cover a mirror. Cover Me Beautiful...sounds dorky, but just a thought. Good luck and best wishes in this endeavor!

    ReplyDelete
  12. yay! So fun to see this announced! They look amazing, and I love all the additional treatments, like ceiling molding--genius!

As for a name, I will join the crowd and vote for overlaid. I also like the commenter suggested "fret" like in "fretwork" except that to fret is to worry, and I think the idea of these is so worry-free.

  13. Brilliant! A few years ago I was looking for fretwork panels to put replace an armoire door panel with and the only place you could get them was England! a perfect niche! I love all your ideas...

    ReplyDelete
  14. This is an amazing business idea! Brilliant! Can't wait to buy some. Overlaid is cute, but I do think playing off the word fret is a cool idea. Maybe fret-work or "no fret" - I don't know, maybe not. I'm terrible at coming up with names, but I know a great idea when I see one! Kudos!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. These are really brilliant. Maybe you could also sell them prepainted in a selection of colors for those of us who are lazy!

For a name, I would play around with the words "toppers", "layers" and "pattern" . . . good job!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh oh oh - I really want to win the gift card so I am going to come up with the winner, ok? I think I would be more likely to click on your business if the name was clear about what it was so I'm going sort of literal.

    How about...

    Le Fretwork

    Decor Garnish

    also I like O'verlay

    Decor Panels

wish i could come up with more - good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  17. genius! i always love your stuff but these are really good!!!

    love flair! or furniture flair??

    ReplyDelete
  18. You're so smart. I like "Overlaid" for the double entendre. Garnish makes me think of the "frost yourself" line from "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days." Did I just inadvertantly admit to seeing that movie? Whoops...

    ReplyDelete
  19. these look beautiful! i love how you used it along the ceiling too.

    I like overlaid best.

    ReplyDelete
  20. fantastic!!! I would buy those in a heartbeat! Love Fret!

    ReplyDelete
  21. amazing!!

I'm so excited for all the potential. That rast is so fab. I want! I want!

Name-wise I'm not so sure, but when I look at it, I think architectural lace. or something about ornamentation...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Amazing! Definitely offer them in sizes big enough to put on cabinets. I like Overlaid, or maybe Belle Choses -which is the French way to say Gorgeous Things.

    ReplyDelete
  23. love love love love these!!!

I'll have to put my 'clean' thinking cap on to come up with a fun name...my mind is in the gutter lately too- and its pretty happy there.

Anyway, I think I'm headed to Ikea this weekend- would it be overly nutty of me to be THAT excited about this that I picked up a few pieces to makeover hahaa?

OK, no more work is getting done at the office today, I'm off to figure out what I can do with these things!

    ReplyDelete
  24. ok back already- I love Overlaid like the rest of the comments- but I also love the Flair thing. Then I read Fret, as in Fretwork, and I got on the F words (again with the mind in the gutter) but I love love love the word frosting, and since its furniture frosting maybe something along those lines.

Fret Frosting, Frosting Flair, Frosted, Furniture Fret Frosting or 3F....ok I'm coming up with AWFUL names now BUT I'm going with the Frosting name :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. This is so completely *brilliant* and every DIYer world wide is going to *LOVE* you for it! I'm with the comments about office space for "flair"...no good...but I do kinda like Garnish...I really don't care what it's called because I'm so excited about the possibilities...ENDLESS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. These are amazing...love the blue and gold dresser. I want some! I like Overlaid. Here are some others: ReLay, Fret Flourish, Pattern Play, or NoFret.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yowza, these are awesome, Danika! So happy for you that this is a reality. I know it's going to be a huge success. Garnish makes me think of food, Flair reminds me of Jennifer Aniston at that TGIF kind of place in Office Space, and Overlaid puts my mind in the gutter with yours. I do like O'verlay though. Has a nice ring to it. And looks nice. Congrats again!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Love these!! I have been working on a name while I should be working on new business...lol. I like the tagline: "No-fuss fantastic!" and have thought of Adornments as a simple name. In looking at synonyms, I came up with "garnish," but it does sound foodlike- though "furniture garnish" would make one wonder what it is...but limit its utility!

Makes me want to redo dressers in my spare time :)

    xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, a great idea! Love the pattern of the first drawer on the MALM. Depending on price point, I would definitely purchase these for my own DIY projects.

I agree with the other person who mentioned Flair reminded them of Office Space though! I like the one word title though... I think Overlaid is a winner!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I absolutely LOVE the pax cabinets in the first photo. I want to make some for my daughter's room. "Fretwork" describes what it is but it will be a success whatever you call it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh my gosh! What a fantastic idea! I'm already scanning my room as I sit here typing trying to figure out what I can overlay. I vote Overlaid for the name! Soo excited!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love this! What an amazing idea. As for the name, I like the idea of playing off of fretwork some way, but I'm not exactly sure how.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would have to say Overlaid. It;s catchy. Garnish sounds too much like you are cooking.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I honestly just like Fret. Or a two word play on the F. Like Fab Fret, Fret Flair, Fret & Flourish. I think the others are commonplace but Fret sounds sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You are a genius!! I hope you make a million $$ and I can say I knew you when!! Good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Overlaid is a brilliant name. These are fabulous, I want one!

    ReplyDelete
  37. These are beautiful! So many ways to use them....I like Overlaid! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. OVERLAY!!! Love it! I've been so looking for these! Can't wait!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Those are awesomeness!!!!
I don't like flair or garnish. Overlay is the best so far...what about something a little more descriptive? like Geometric Overlay...or Design Overlay...
    hmmm.. thinking thinking...
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh HON!!!!!! I am so excited for my promos to come in the mail. I am so thrilled with this brilliance and see BIG BIG Things for you lovers! I am tweeting about this right now! So proud!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Brilliant!! Every DIYer will be all over this!! I'm horrible w/names, but I thought of the word 'details' when I saw this. Not only is this an added layer of detail/interest, but your designs are so detailed/ornate. Out of the ones you've listed....I like o'verlay!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love love love this! I like Overlaid, but I'm not obsessed. But whatever you name it, you'll be a total success because the idea is heavenly! You should advertise on IkeaHacker, it's the perfect pair!

  43. Hi I totally love those! Can't wait to get some. Good for you girls. Watching the Bruins right now, they are kicking butt. Go Boston.

    ReplyDelete
  44. omg, I have been looking for this product for months! I can't wait till your shop opens. I want them for my antique secretary, for the interior glass door, in a 10" x 23" size, pretty please.

    I vote for Overlaid.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Incredible product concept- and man, are they fabulous!

Nixing Garnish- in addition to the comments already mentioned, it is awfully close to Garish. Eeek. Also nixing Flair for the Office Space reason.

I like Overlaid the best. :)

Best of luck- nice to see such a great idea blossom!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Very cool idea and best of luck with it!

    My two cents:

I don't like overlaid because it's just not classy like the product - it's cheeky, and you want your company to be taken seriously and not sounds like the name of a bad porn movie!

So, what would I call it? I don't know! How about Fancy Frets, Fretful Transformations

Hmm, I'll definitely need to ponder this one!

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wowzers! You two are brilliant, what a great idea! Will you ship to Australia??

    Name-wise, how about DecFret?

Also I used a bedroom from your portfolio on my blog yesterday, hope that's cool (with credit of course!)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't have a suggestion for a name but I can't wait until you launch so I can buy some of the fretwork to chic up my daughter's room.

What kind of fretwork did you use for the Pax wardrobes. Those are fab too.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Finishing Touch?

    Applied Art?

    It's All in the Details?

Whatever you choose to call these, the idea and execution are truly brilliant. I need to come up with a reason to use these and can not wait for you to make them available. Congratulations!

    p.s.-Overlaid is pretty great too!

  51. Details by Design?

    Fret Not?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am freaking out about these!!! I am in love with the all white dresser - drooling!! Fantastic idea. Whatever sizes will fit those IKEA dressers the best works for me.

I actually like Flair, though it does remind me of Office Space:) I guess Overlaid is best?

    Wonderful, wonderful!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh my!! Can't wait for these! Fabulous Freakin Fretwork, indeed! Best of luck on a wonderful product.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Full Frontal Renewity

    Great idea, BTW

    ReplyDelete
  59. I like flair! Also, as far as sizes go... will there be a size to fit on the sides of doors? We have long narrow windows on the sides of our entry door that this would look awesome on. I think they are a standard size on many entry doors... something to keep in mind...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Holy awsomeness! These are brilliant. I love the name Overlay. I think it tells all. Congrats on your new venture. It's sure to be a huge success.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! I will definitely be buying some from you guys. I just have to narrow down what to do with them, since I love all your ideas! PLUS it is wonderful that you are making them IKEA compatible so that it will be easy to do a quick project. I like Overlaid, but I love something with Fretwork in the title, too. Fab idea!

    Ooh-la-Lays
    Decor-Lays (or Decorlaid)

  89. I like Overlays, i think it it gets you away from the overlaid...kinda mind in the gutter vibe a bit and still sounds like what your delivering, ya know? great idea here! cant wait for the web launch!

  90. My Vote Is for overlaid!! These are amazing, I need them for my room!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Ive been endlessly searching for something like this for my own mirrored Billy hack! What a relief that there will soon be something on the market!
As for names, Garnish strikes me as a food reference. Overlays might be a little too obvious and it doesn't sound special/pretty to me. Overlaid just steers my mind into the gutter:) What about "Fretworks"? Its a play on words and sounds kinda delicate and pretty just like your products! "Fret Flair" is another idea:) Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  92. oohh oohh ohhh!!!!! I love them!

Its hard to name something so fabulous. I do like Overlaid, but my mind is in the gutter too LOL

    Heres a few others:

    Wood Lace
    Ornamental Overlays
    Gilding The Lily

  94. Stumbled on to your page and like your fret work a lot! Whether you call this product 'Overlaid' or 'Fretastic,' you may also want to think big picture... I'm sure your ingenuity will lead to more DIY products, so what's your BRAND going to be? Will it be "Gorgeous Shiny Things" or something else which captures the essence of your aesthetic, DIY design, giving old furnishings a new life, etc.?
