I have been a blonde for over a (couple) decade(s) now.
My real hair is something like this I think, well at least that was what I was born with:
SO not cute...
I think I took my fashion cues from Sophia on the Golden Girls:
I had to go way back to find a photo before I started messing with my color
(I discovered peroxide in 6th grade).
Honestly I am scared shitless to go brown,
but it is exhausting maintaining the blonde.
Especially since I went platinum a few months ago.
(current day, roots are wallet killer$)
Both my sisters rock their brown, why can't I?
So I think I am ready to take the leap and fade out.
This is what got me started down this road:
I pinned the coat first, but then was all "I kinda like the hair- I can do that I think"
and of course then I was all delusional like
"I can grow it and ombre it an look just like Jessica"
"or maybe ombre what I have now to transition myself"...
and then I went back to growing it to look like her ...
F U Pinterest for screwing with my head.
Anyhow. Hair is kind of like paint in my book.
I can't be scared to change it,
it grows (slowly) and I can always color it if I don't like.
How about you guys, anyone doing anything drastic lately to their head?
Sophia from Golden Girls!!! That made me laugh, you're so funny. I have never dyed my hair! I'm scared of it too...but I think brown would look wonderful, and you can always dye it back if you end up not liking it! Can't wait to see :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, you absolutely should do it! I had lots of blonde highlights and it made me look blonde overall. My daughter is attends a cosmetology school and I went in for her to practice on my hair. Scary! Anyhoo, she said my hair was too blond and she gave me a darker base color with slightly lighter highlights and I love it and so does everyone else. The richer color will actually make you look younger , which was surprising to me but it works! Do it - I know you'll be glad you did!

I just went back to my roots after over a decade of being blond, and I don't regret it for a moment. My sisters looked terrific as (natural) brunettes, so why was I fighting it? And, truth be told, so many people have said it works better with my coloring, and heck yes: it's so much easier to maintain. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteI have been feeling exactly the same way about my blond hair, and did something about it only yesterday. My stylist left some of the blond for highlights, but darkened the rest. Now my complexion looks healthier, and the maintenance will be infinitely easier on both my pocketbook and my hair. I have no regrets. If you are thinking of ombre, consider this: With the lighter color on only the lower portion of your hair, you don't have to maintain it at all. As your hair grows, the lighter color simply gets narrower as you cut it. That said, the women in my salon, who do the ombre, notice that the processed hair is far less healthy than the unprocessed, and usually decide to let it grow out completely, at least for a while. No color treatment is as beautiful as healthy hair.
ReplyDeleteI went violet red earlier this year because I was ready to do something different with my previously undyed locks. It loved it but it was hard to maintain and didn't look good when it faded. Now I'm back to brown although darker than my natural color. I like it. You don't need to wear as much make up with darker hair. It makes my dark eyes stand out more too!
ReplyDeleteI really think you should go back to looking like Sophia!! xo Cheryle
ReplyDeleteI'm facing the same decision right now, blonde is my fave but maintaining the roots really is a wallet buster. I find deals on Gilt City for huge discounts for cut and colors-- currently there is deal for a cut, yogurt color process, and blowout for $55 at Anthony David Salon in Burlington!!! I snagged that deal, after putting off my roots for 3 months.
ReplyDeleteI have brown hair with golden/caramel highlights (or lowlights, I have no idea of the terminology). I never went blond though, so I know that's a hard ideological shift to make. I can tell you, though, with my gray creeping in, I still have to color my hair every 8 weeks. Not sure it's much better on the pocketbook. I say, go for the brown! Who says blonds have more fun (oh, the blonds do, duh)?
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny! I have been blonde my whole life, and highlighting my hair since 7th grade. Two years ago, I went red and have loved it! The roots don't show as bad when they do come in (I was having to get root touch-ups every two weeks before!) Can't wait to see pictures.
ReplyDeleteOh the ombre effect would be a cool transition phase with the light on the bottom. I say go for it on your way to being a brunette.
ReplyDeleteI dyed my hair red for years. It was hard to maintain as it faded so quickly. 2 years ago I went from a red short, spiky cut to grown out (all natural) medium length brown/lots of gray cut. I'm in the middle of a hair crisis. I miss the fun, youthful cut and color. But I know I always get to this stage of growing out with no real style and end up cutting it all off. I've done it probably 4 or 5 time and yet go back to growing it out. The lack of color things is relatively new though. I think my strategy is to go to a more expensive, hip, salon and put myself in their hopefully capable hands. I'm hoping to make the brown/gray mix look not so old and drab. Maybe highlights of some sort? I don't want an all over color. Yes, I want a miracle all for under $100!
I was blonde my whole life and then went dark red...loved it but the maintenance was brutal...I just recently transitioned to the ombre thing and I love it- dark on top and lighter on the bottom- so easy to take care of. I say go for it- I think it dark would look amazing on you.
ReplyDeleteI've flirted with blonde several times - hair doesn't like going back, until it has actually grown out, the color will fade quickly. Though that doesn't mean you shouldn't go dark! Brown hair is beautiful and being close to your natural color means you'll be able to wear a wider range of colors.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen ombre'd hair on "normal" people that didn't look like a mess. I think you have to have the rest of you perfectly groomed so it doesn't just look like you got lazy with your roots. So no quick trips to the corner store in sweats, you know?
My daughter had ombre done to her..it looks fantastic and subtle.
ReplyDeleteI've seen ombre done on regular people and it's beautiful! Like you, my natural color is a dark ash brown aka mousy brown! I bleached it blonde for so many years, even my daughter didn't realize that I was not a natural blonde!
ReplyDeleteMy hairdresser started with low lights and each time added more until it all grew out. I was happy with my natural color for about 12 years. Now I have so much gray, I was getting depressed. I asked my hairdresser to make it beautiful! He put in blonde streaks, very light brown streaks and now I love my hair asgain!
You can do it!!!
It must be the season or moon or something. I have been patiently growing out, telling people to stop me if I ever try to cut my hair short again....but then 3 people said "that one short cut you had was SOOO cute". Now I'm like, let's have some cocktails and pixie it up!
ReplyDeleteShut up! You are a blonde inside an out! You are lighthearted, whimsical , deep ( like your roots... And mine)
ReplyDeleteDynamic, mercurial and effervescent...that's a blondie Thru and thru! You will hate darker hair bc you are not dark inside... Deep, yes.. Dark, no... I get it bc I too, wrestle with the maintence/ sister thing as well...
