My Desk

Today I want to share a family story with you.
It's the story of my desk.

There is a lot more behind this desk than just function.
There are memories of my grandfather, the man whom it used to belong to.
There are memories of hanging out in my grandparent's basement with my cousins
during holiday get-togethers.

After my grandfather retired he moved his office to his basement- an early man cave.
He was a practical man, so he took an existing table and used that as his desk.  He kept it meticulous, with neatly arranged pads of paper and a mug full of pens and pencils.  A television was set into the wall above the desk, and he would watch ballgames while simultaneously listening to another on his transistor radio.  We kids would sneak down there after family dinners and watch very vintage MTV (think young Kurt Loder), doodle on the endless pads of paper
or play the piano that was right next to the desk.

When my grandparents passed away,  I asked for their basement furniture.
It was an entire matching set that had a retro flair I adored, and it was full of childhood memories.
In our last house I used it on our sunporch...

Upon moving to our current house I set it up in our basement,
but I brought the table upstairs to use as my desk.
My office has undergone many incarnations, but I keep going back to this table.
It has a ton of surface area to spread out on and is the perfect height.

I know several people would choose to keep an object exactly as it was,
but as a serial 'repurposer'  I decided to make it my own.
I began by spraying the legs gold and painting the wood top white.
I embellished the top with a simple zigzag stripe using painter's tape.

I had a "happy accident" when I applied a coat of polyurethane before my stripes were fully dried, causing the stripe to crack and pull.
I really like the result.
It feels weathered, and the fact is this desk is about 60 years old.

I don't think my grandfather would mind that I painted his desk,
instead I think he would be glad to know it is getting well used.

And that it constantly reminds me of where I came from...
and of the man that taught me not to be afraid of hard work...
and that anything is possible because he was proof of that.

My grandfather left his family's farm in Rhode Island at the young age of 15
because he saw his future was sealed with a job at the local mill.
He had a natural inclination for fixing things and he moved to Passaic, NJ where he got a job working as a mechanic.  He saved his money and in a few years bought his own shop.  A true workaholic, he would sleep in the bathtub of his shop after putting in a long day.

He loved airplanes.
He was very determined and he got his pilot's license
and then eventually his own plane.
He met my grandmother and they started a family.
They instilled strong values in us and you knew you were loved.
I have so many good stories and traditions that I will to pass on to my own children,
this desk being part of it.

As part of  True Value's DIY Squad I am so pleased to share a video
that really resonates the importance of heirlooms.
It had me tearing up a bit, thinking of how special the family pieces I own are, and how glad I am that I can incorporate them into my family's life.

Please watch this video and let me know about your own favorite heirloom.
What is it?
How have you kept it in the family?
I would love to know if you made any DIY changes to it or left it just as it was.

Please leave me a comment below telling me your story.  I'm looking forward to hearing them!

Speed bump.

I had plans to post my bathroom today...
but I had a diversion called the "Stomach Flu" hit my house this Saturday night.

Instead my husband camped out on the floor in there.
At first I thought maybe he was being all dramatic about all the pink, making vomiting noises and such... but he was legit sick, not "daggers in the eye, I hate pink" sick.

So this morning I bleached and cleaned and cleaned and bleached,
hoping to flush the nasty bug out of the house before anyone else gets it.
Which is why you are seeing pictures of my living room.

Its f*ing spotless and I think its finally done.
Actually my whole house is f*ing spotless.

And I confirmed something...
Rearranging your furniture often when you have kids is a necessity.

Hey look what I found under the couch... the remote!
They are wild animals- and they have the day off tomorrow. bye clean house.

So I will be back to painting, and hopefully not barfing.

Hope you are all healthy!

Update: One year ago today...

...I painted my Formica kitchen countertops to look like marble.
I have received a lot of questions about how it was holding up over the past year so I decided to show you (and also I realized how many changes my kitchen has undergone!)

Here is my Ikea Docksta table I also painted today.
This surface has the most wear since it used for homework and eating. There are a few permanent marker spots I can't remove, but I figure I can paint them out...
Here is was a year ago...
 The counters one year ago...
 And today...
Upclose now...
I do have a few mystery marks I can't remove.  A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser takes off most marks and stains though. For those that are stubborn I will eventually paint them and add a fresh coat of polyurethane to the entire counter. That is the secret to keeping them looking new.
What I found entertaining was all the changes.
Yes. It is a well known fact I like to change things up and I might be
crazy when it comes to all things decorative.
To me paint is like underwear and I change mine often.
I was one of those kids that rearranged their room monthly, so this has been going on for a long time and I don't see it ending soon. I also get bored easily and am way too visually stimulated.

In one year the kitchen had:
4 wall colors (turquoise, white, pink, and blue)
3 light fixtures
2 tables
2 types of chairs
2 different curtain panels
and we replaced the dishwasher, refrigerator and faucet.
Phew!
(the pink, orange and purple kitchen)

(the "pink for a day- then the men in my life had to have opinions" kitchen)

And the present kitchen.  Got my pink in little punches.
The only remaining original appliance is the Brady Bunch ovens.
The top one broke, so they too will be leaving soon.

The one thing that hasn't changed?
The orange mudroom...

Tweaking...

I have been busy freshening up the painted Ikat Chevron in the entry.  It needed to be brightened...
AFTER

Added some greens and pinked up the lavenders.
More spring, Less winter.

 BEFORE

P.S.
The bathroom wall has a coat of primer, and Madame Butterfly is moving in shortly.

???? and the traveling art/lamps

I'm stuck folks.  I have been sporadically painting and rearranging between working and the kids being home all week. Spring fever. I started a stencil in my bathroom earlier this week that I have yet to finish because as soon as I started I saw the Designers Guild crazy gorgeous Madame Butterfly paper from my last post and can really see that in here with a white linen roman and banding. Run on sentence, sorry.

Here is the space...

+ this maybe

Should I attempt to paint something like the above??????

I had originally wanted to get some yardage to do some pillows in my living room, but now I just don't know.  This is where I hate design and the prettiness overload on my brain.
MAJOR BRAIN CRAMP!!!
So for now the bathroom is dormant.

SO in other areas, we had the house reappraised yesterday to do a re-fi since we decided to stay in "el rancho".  Let me tell you, there is nothing like an appraisal to get your ass in gear and your house spotless. I spent all yesterday cleaning, rearranging, etc.  In the process I found some old treasures.

My Genie Lamps came up from the basement and into my bedroom...

I had forgotten all about a pair of pretty crystal candlesticks I had too. Need shades.

I am ALMOST done with the family room!

I moved some art around.
"Big Pink" came out of my office and over the fireplace, the black round mirror moved to the entry...

(hello, pig butt)

I still need to schnazzle up the bar a bit...

and my lotus candle holders I got from Sissy's Blue Hudrangea Bazaar now have a place on the buffet...

and that is all I can show you because my camera died.

So tell me now, do I paint craziness in the bath or go the safe and geometric route?
My weekend is in your hands.

XO

Spring and it's effects on me

I reallllllly want this...
I saw this over on Heather Bullard's FB page yesterday and have been daydreaming of pretty little herb beds wrapped in wattle.  It also has me itching for spring!

Love these beds too...

I have been scouring the internet for places to buy such panels, but it seems the UK is the only one onboard.
I found a how to here, but I really don't have the time, patience or access to enough branches on my property.
Anyone have a good source for wattle panels?

On the home front, it is school vacation week.  Both kids have been fighting a lovely cold that has led to a cough, and now it has landed in their ears. Boo.

So to keep myself sane I have made them little beds on the couches, got ON DEMAND going with movies and I am in spring cleaning mode.   I am painting and rearranging everything!

Here are a few projects I have going...

Priming...
The big bamboozle is finally getting its day to shine and is going green...

It is now the center of attention in the family room.  Sadly, anything with a TV on it is the center of attention in our house...

It is huge, like 8' long and fits a lot of crap.

And the entry is getting zhushed up.

Pretty french table going dark, and some art and lighting is about to change...

All because I am trapped in the house and hut happy for spring.

I hope to have some afters for you by Friday.

Super Cheap DIY Metallic Gold Grasscloth

In honor of the end of spray paint season, I decided to go out big.
6 1/2 cans and light headed big.
For my next trick I decided to make my own metallic gold grasscloth.  Why?
Because I really wanted some and didn't feel like spending over $100 a roll for it.
Mine totaled out under $20 a roll...

sorry for nightitme pics, need to update in the morning

Remember my hell room?
This is what it looked earlier in the day...

Grasscloth has saved it!
So here is how I made my own metallic weave..

1) Find remnants or excess on Ebay or wallpaper sale sites.  I found 4 new tan Waverly singles for the "Buy It Now" price of $49.99.
( I lost 2 auctions because I was trying to stay under $10 a roll, and both times they went for about $15. Stupid, cheap me.  When I saw this for $12.50 a roll I jumped quick.)
I also had 1 1/2 rolls of a similar weave in dark green from a previous project.

2) Make a sample...

This is a shot of the tan and the green painted.  They looked close enough, especially because I had a big break between where they would be going.

3) Spray away.  I used 2 sawhorses and cardboard along the bottoms for the rolls to rest on.  I did one roll Sunday when it was warm and it dried really fast.  Today was chilly so it took a bit longer.  Simple back and forth motion.  2 cans+ does a double roll.

4) Hang.

Grasscloth is also awesome for the 36" width factor. It covers faster and is rigid so it was very easy.  It went right over my paneling and covered the seams perfectly!
(I did get impatient at the end and cut myself twice while trimming due to the thickness, but I should have changed my blade.)

One tip I have is to paint any trim that is against the grasscloth BEFORE hanging.
The last thing you want to do is get paint on your paper, and this way the trim painting is easy...

I am almost done with this room!  I love how much cozier the space feels by adding gold and texture. It feels very "Thanksgivingish".
Thomas just likes to ride the gold pig and wear a "big brain".

So final break down for the paper...
4 singles @ $12.50 each (Ebay)
1 1/2 singles -personal remnant
6 cans Rustoleum Bright Gold $3.21 (on sale Lowe's)
Total- $69.25
