Super Cheap DIY Metallic Gold Grasscloth

In honor of the end of spray paint season, I decided to go out big.

6 1/2 cans and light headed big.

For my next trick I decided to make my own metallic gold grasscloth. Why?

Because I really wanted some and didn't feel like spending over $100 a roll for it.

Mine totaled out under $20 a roll...

Grasscloth has saved it!

So here is how I made my own metallic weave..

1) Find remnants or excess on Ebay or wallpaper sale sites. I found 4 new tan Waverly singles for the "Buy It Now" price of $49.99.

( I lost 2 auctions because I was trying to stay under $10 a roll, and both times they went for about $15. Stupid, cheap me. When I saw this for $12.50 a roll I jumped quick.)

I also had 1 1/2 rolls of a similar weave in dark green from a previous project.

2) Make a sample...

This is a shot of the tan and the green painted. They looked close enough, especially because I had a big break between where they would be going.

3) Spray away. I used 2 sawhorses and cardboard along the bottoms for the rolls to rest on. I did one roll Sunday when it was warm and it dried really fast. Today was chilly so it took a bit longer. Simple back and forth motion. 2 cans+ does a double roll.

4) Hang.

Grasscloth is also awesome for the 36" width factor. It covers faster and is rigid so it was very easy. It went right over my paneling and covered the seams perfectly!

(I did get impatient at the end and cut myself twice while trimming due to the thickness, but I should have changed my blade.)

One tip I have is to paint any trim that is against the grasscloth BEFORE hanging.

The last thing you want to do is get paint on your paper, and this way the trim painting is easy...

I am almost done with this room! I love how much cozier the space feels by adding gold and texture. It feels very "Thanksgivingish".

Thomas just likes to ride the gold pig and wear a "big brain".

So final break down for the paper...

4 singles @ $12.50 each (Ebay)

1 1/2 singles -personal remnant

6 cans Rustoleum Bright Gold $3.21 (on sale Lowe's)

Total- $69.25

I hadn't been on Bryonie Porter's site in a long while, and I swore I did a post on it a long time ago, but I got nothing. Anyhow, I am just loving these patchwork pieces of hers. I have wanted to wallpaper my bedroom dresser for a while now, just too lazy and have too many other things that seem easier and more fun (truth be told I hate wallpapering- the cutting and pasting/ precision and patience). But this seems like it would be a whole lot more forgiving and for a Design Schizo like me I don't have to pick just one paper...

This on the other hand requires the measuring and centering abilities of a sniper...

Mine would be all cockeyed.

The Endura is a classic. It makes for quiet wall texture, and would be fab in fabric (ie...on a sofa)...

And I would love this for my boys bath...

What do you do when you love your wallpaper pattern, but have grown tired of the color?

Head to your local paint store. Make sure they know magic.

Shaun Clarke; color extraordinaire, owner of Water's & Brown and one of the founders of C2 Paint got a challenge today. He is also my old boss so he kind of expects this kind of crazy stuff from me.

I love Lulu DK's Chant pattern, but my color scheme is changing and I was done with red. I asked him what he could mix up for me to glaze over the wallpaper and "tint" it to the blue/ plum family. (My new living room scheme.) If he could pull this off he'd be a superhero because I really didn't want to strip this paper. He mixed up a pint of C2 Blackberry and we tested it on a piece of remnant paper I had. I liked what I saw and ran home.

I had a sitter today, so she became my assistant snapping how-to pics. (Thanks Lindsey!)

I was so excited to do this I didn't change my clothes. I'm actually wearing a skirt and heeled boots.

I'm very impatient, when I get an idea I act.

So I mixed one part Open Time (a latex extender) with 3 parts paint, grabbed a high density small foam roller and went at it.

I had originally planned on taping out each panel, rolling and wiping off tint (see 1st pic).

That quickly changed when I hit the big wall. All bets were off and it was drying too fast. I kind of liked the way the roller covered, so evenly so I wound up just rolling (and carefully making sure to feather out roller marks). See how fast I'm going? Where is my hand? FLYING! The whole project took an hour.

I did a light second coat to even it out and got a color a bit more indigo than planned, but I likey.

This picture was taken right at sunset, so its a bit darker than it normal.

I hope to have the rest of the room for you this week.

Its school vacation week so I am home with the kids.

I am trying to suck them into this craziness, making it like a "fun" project.

I have one convinced so far.

On a Blue Streak

*Note to reader: This post was written after ingesting Alkaseltzer Plus Night Cold Formula. I had good CLEAR intentions before starting, but it hijacked my brain and made me a bit rambly. (But I FEEL great!) Sorry, I really like blue lacquer. Also, spell check wouldn't work... of all days!

While browsing through the lovely images on Jennifer Robertson's new blog Belclair House I spied this image...

Oh those walls! Show me more!!!! I haven't bought the latest Veranda and I'd love to know if they do. I'd buy it for sure.

This got me spinning on blue lacquered walls again. I love /want the look, and it is so hard to achieve because it shows every imperfection in the wall. I don't mind them if its an old house, its actually adds character, but when its newer contruction there really is no excuse. So this brings me to wallpaper. I was just looking through Phillip Jefferies Sourcebook the other night and was admiring their lacquered offerings. It's definitely is a bit more forgiving than paint. The navy immediately had me drooling, and then I saw their lacquered strie wallpaper. To die for! Just take a look...
